Kayla is an interdisciplinary artist based in rural Two Harbors, Minnesota, blending dance and film to cope with and communicate her experience of time, place, and presence. Rooted in improvisation, she responds to what is felt, drawing on memory, perception, and her subjectivity to shape her work.
Distinguished by intimacy, vulnerability, and intention, she creates choreography, screendance--which is a hybrid form combining choreography and filmmaking to create dance intended for the screen, installation, and performance with a personal but allegorical quality, facilitating a tender and affirming exchange between artist and audience. Kayla's rural lineage guides her approach. Her current work explores self-performance, mental health, visibility, legacy, and the natural world as collaborator and guide. She is a 2025 McKnight Artist Fellow in Choreography. Beyond her mostly solo practice, Kayla works collaboratively as a dancer and theater artist, performing, choreographing, and designing for the stage carrying the same dynamism and responsiveness that guides her original work. |
